National Press Club Honorable Mention: “The Mind of the South”

Newsweek sent son of the South Christopher Dickey on a roadtrip retracing Sherman's March to the Sea in the summer of 2008. Dickey, son of "Deliverance" author James Dickey, wanted to gauge whether Dixie had changed enough to vote for a Black president.

The Newsweek video team produced 11 videos from the trip, each plotted on an interactive graphic that outlined the route. The entire package earned an Honorable Mention from the National Press Club in 2009.

I executive produced this series, helping come up with the plan for the videos, then managing the production and post-production. There was a very short turn around time on this project so we sent one producer to film and send back tapes while the rest of the team edited pieces in New York.

My favorites from the series are by Lee Wang ("Truth and Reconciliation", "Mind of the South"), an amazing producer who shot the entire trip then rushed back to edit some more, and an edit by the talented Ira Spitzer ("Merchandising Racism"). The below graphic is broken and the videos are only available on YouTube now, but here is what it looked like:
